January 2, 2010 - Prachuap Khiri Khan to Krabi Town, Thailand
Our trip from PKK to Krabi Town is relatively uneventful.
Eric and I catch motorcycle taxis to take us to the bus station on the highway.
Unfortunately, after we’re dropped off and the taxi drivers are long gone, we realize we’re not at a bus station, so much as we’re at a sawngthaew stop. A “sawngthaew” is a pick-up truck with seats lining the side of a covered trunk, sort of like the opelets we used while in Indonesia. We chalk it up to a miscommunication - the taxi drivers must have misunderstood us and thought we meant the side of the highway.
As we figure out what to do, a policeman approaches us. Between our Thai phrasebook and his broken English, we manage to work out that we’re standing in the wrong location, but he’ll figure something out for us. Eric ends up flagging down a bus heading in the general direction we want to go. It’s not the one the police officer had in mind for us, but we jump in anyways, happy to be on the move again!
We arrive in Chumphon early afternoon. Chumphon is about 3 hours south of PKK and about 3 hours north of Krabi Town, so we are making progress.
We have to wait in Chumphon for a couple of hours to catch a bus, which we do, and finally arrive in Krabi Town around 7:00pm.
The town is busy celebrating New Years, still, so we quickly find a place to stay and head out towards the food markets. There are three separate markets of various sizes going on and each of them is packed with people and delicious foods. It’s a satisfying end to our longer than anticipated travel day.
