Day 102 – Thailand

January 15, 2010 - Ayutthaya to Chiang Mai, Thailand

We had a great time on the bicycles yesterday, so we decide to do it again today.

We spend most of the day exploring the mainland of Ayutthaya. We visit one amazing temple along the edge of Chao Phraya – Wat Chai Wattanaram – which has a line of Buddhas along its perimeter that creates a beautiful setting for a morning wander. We then cruise around the surrounding villages and the ruins of the original Portuguese settlement.

Ayutthaya has been great, but after two days we decide it’s time to move on – there are only so many temples one can see before you get tired of them. So we book another overnight bus from Ayutthaya to Chiang Mai for tonight

The evening is spent reading, enjoying an ice coffee and waiting for our night journey to begin.

Eventually, the sawngthaew picks us up to take us to the side of the highway where we are scheduled to catch the bus to Chiang Mai. The bus originates in Bangkok, so when it arrives Eric and I manage to find ourselves some seats, but unfortunately they are at opposite ends of the bus… there goes my pillow!

So it’s see you later until we reach Chiang Mai.

We do have a good laugh at the bus rest stop – Eric figured that since we were no longer sitting together, he was going to have a “snuggle-free” bus ride. However, the guy sitting beside him had other plans and had gotten a little close during the journey.
