December 29, 2009 - Ubud, Bali, Indonesia to Bangkok, Thailand
And so another chapter of our story ends and a new chapter begins, as today we leave Indonesia.
We have a midday flight, so we charter a car to take us to the airport.
Eric and I are happy to be leaving Indonesia as it has been a pretty intense adventure, but we are also sad to go as it’s a beautiful country and we look forward to returning so we can see more of it.
All and all, Day 85 is an uneventful day.
Our flight leaves relatively on time and we land in Bangkok on schedule. We take the airport bus into the city and arrive in the early evening in Banglumphu, a neighbourhood in Bangkok known to travelers as the location of Khao San Road.
Khao San Road is the original backpacker haunt of Bangok and it’s really where the Southeast Asian backpacker craze began. It’s expanded a lot in the last few years to include more streets which consist essentially of guesthouses & hostels, bars & restaurants, fruit & pad thai carts and clothing & souvenir stalls. At night, the roads are closed off to vehicles and all the bars & restaurants turn their chairs towards the street to provide optimum viewing of the people walking by… a total rubber-necking society!!
We hadn’t booked a guesthouse ahead of time – we decided to play the odds to the number of guesthouses in one area. It paid off as we end up with a room in a quiet residential area away from the main backpacker hive.
Eric and I spend our evening wandering the night market in and around Khao San Road and sharing a beer with some fellow Canadians we met on the airport bus.
Not a bad way to start our adventure in Thailand.
